ArtThem: Planet friendly Sustainable Style workshops

Are you a young artist eager to explore new mediums? Join our wearable art sessions in Newport, South Wales, where you’ll learn to repurpose garments and connect with a vibrant creative community.

The free-to-attend textile art-themed sessions will commence in August and September, starting with an introductory session for 11 to 15-year-olds, followed by a second session tailored for 16 to 25-year-olds. These sessions serve as taster events, leading to signing up for longer accredited sessions to follow later in the project.

Session Details:

The sessions will introduce participants to the accreditation of the textile art and design process and the concept of wearable art. Attendees will be shown examples of decorated pieces, setting the stage for their creative endeavours. Each session will require a rail stocked with pre-prepared garments sourced from second-hand shops. These garments, dyed and reworked, provide a stylish, upcycled canvas for the participants to embellish.

Participants will receive design templates, paper, and art materials to sketch their initial designs. They will also select haberdashery items to incorporate into their fabric designs. A crucial part of the creative process involves online research, where participants will gather inspiration and create a Pinterest board. This board will later be incorporated into their portfolios.

Once designs are finalised, participants will transform their concepts into wearable art pieces on the garments. Upon completion, each piece will be photographed on a mannequin, allowing the young artists to take their creations home to wear.
