Youth Cymru is a national youth work charity with an 81 year history. Our mission is to support young people (11-25) to reach their full potential and have a voice in all decisions affecting them, to promote positive images of young people, showcasing their achievements and ensuring the vital role of youth work within Wales is recognised by decision makers and wider society.

Core to our mission is promoting the widest possible range of experiences and activities to young people, working directly and through our 197 member organisations. Members work in every local authority area in Wales (in voluntary and statutory settings), concentrated in the most deprived communities. In 2014/15, we engaged with 218,418 young people. Membership is free.

Overview

Youth Cymru is recruiting for a Big Music Project Intern to join our team in Trefforest Trading Estate, Pontypridd.

The Big Music Project Intern will provide logistical support for the Big Music Project by liaising with hubs, communicating effectively with other national partners, and ensuring all partners are adhering to the Surface Level Agreement. The intern will also support the organisation of all events ran by Youth Cymru including, Big Music LIVE, INTROFEST, Science Week and Money Smart Toolkit Launch.

The intern will promote the Big Music Project and Youth Cymru’s work to decision makers and influencers in the Welsh Government, National Assembly for Wales, and in Local Authorities where there are Big Music hubs. The intern will also support hubs to promote their work to local newspapers and radio stations, in addition to publicising the project on a national level.

Key Objectives

To provide high-quality, day-to-day support on the Big Music Project to both Youth Cymru staff, national partners, and Hub Workers.

To help plan and co-ordinate Big Music LIVE, Celebration events, and INTROFEST.

To communicate the Big Music Project to key decision makers and influencers, and to publicise the work of the Big Music Project to local and national press.

Key tasks

General

  • Office tasks: answering the phone, taking messages, welcoming visitors, responding to emails.
  • Administration for events: booking venues, managing invitations, booking stall holders, booking performers, duties at events, creating content for posters
  • Contributing to weekly e-bulletins
  • Supporting all projects run within Youth Cymru
  • Project co-ordination including distribution of project materials, liaising with project partners and with Youth Cymru members
  • Attending meetings with external organisations
  • Writing up evaluations and reports on projects and events attended by Youth Cymru

Big Music Project

  • Provide ongoing day-to-day support for the Big Music Project to Youth Cymru staff, Hub workers, and national partners
  • Communicating the Big Music Project to key decision makers and influencers in the National Assembly for Wales and Welsh Government
  • Supporting Big Music Hubs to communicate their work to local decision makers, influencers, and press.
  • Promoting the work of the Big Music Project on social media platforms.
  • Effective internal project communications between Youth Cymru, national partners, and Hubs.

Person Specification

 We are looking for a candidate with a passion for organising and supporting events in the creative industries. You should be reliable, be able to demonstrate initiative, be well-organised, a good communicator and be motivated to learn new skills. You will also need to be trusted to handle work efficiently in the absence of the manager.

Preference will be given to self-starting individuals able to demonstrate practical experience (eg volunteering for events, writing about music, promoting shows) over academic qualifications or work undertaken solely for the purpose of a qualification.

This internship is open to people from all backgrounds aged 18-25.

A university degree is not required.

Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn is more important to us than paper qualifications. We’re not expecting you to be the finished article as training and support will be given.

Desired Skills/Qualifications

  • A grasp of Word/Excel and other office packages
  • Graphic design, video/audio editing or photography experience
  • Writing experience eg blogs, reviews, press releases
  • Experience with following applications/services: Eventbrite, Mailchimp, Google Docs, Box.
  • Welsh Speaker
  • Worked on The Big Music Project as a champion
